CNZ Strategic Plan 2026–2030

Published December 2025

Mission and vision

CNZ’s mission is to provide the sporting governance and infrastructure to grow and promote competition climbing in New Zealand as a vibrant, enjoyable and enriching sport — giving all New Zealanders the opportunity to participate, enjoy and develop in climbing, whether as a personal goal or in competition locally or on the world stage.

The vision: New Zealand climbers competitive on the world stage across all climbing disciplines.

Four strategic pillars

The plan is built around four pillars, each equally important. CNZ can’t deliver great competitions or a high performance programme without a strong organisation behind them, and internationally competitive athletes won’t emerge without participation growth at the grassroots.

  1. Great local competitions — delivering national championships to a high standard and growing competitions nationwide
  2. A high performance framework — building pathways from club-level through to World Cup and Olympic representation
  3. Internationally competitive athletes — closing the gap between NZ national standard and World Cup level across all disciplines
  4. Organisational excellence — stronger governance, sustainable funding, and better communication with clubs

2026 focus areas

  • Building an event management sub-committee and putting playbooks in place for national competitions
  • Developing a high performance programme for boulder and lead athletes with long-term World Cup and Olympic ambition
  • Helping athletes across all disciplines plan for and attend international events
  • Establishing annual planning and budgeting processes at governance level
  • Setting up a finance and funding sub-committee to co-ordinate CNZ’s revenue and costs
  • Advancing a website refresh and improving regular communications with clubs
