This information is for Youth Climbers: Youth B, Youth A and Juniors.
There is no additional selection event for Youth D, Youth C or Open athletes, other than their respective events for the season.
Selection into New Zealand Youth Teams for Lead will include an additional selection event that we run in tandem with the La Sportiva Open Lead Championships scheduled for the 23rd of March in Rotorua.
The event is an additional selection test for Youth B, Youth A and Juniors only.
Open athletes will be selected on their performance at the 2023/2024 La Sportiva Open Lead Championships only.
Youth C and Youth D will be selected on their performance at the La Sportiva Youth, Masters and Paraclimbing Championships only.
Youth B, Youth A and Junior athletes will be selected on their performances across the 2 events based on the points set out in the Selection Policy.
Details of the Selection Camp (Event) are as follows:
All Youth A and Junior athletes seeking NZ Youth Team selection are expected to compete at the Open Lead event in the Open category. This event will double as a selection event for Youth athletes seeking selection in NZ Teams in 2024
All Youth A and Junior athletes who compete will be ranked in their age group to earn selection points.
For Youth B athletes, this will also be a selection event for those seeking selection in NZ Teams in 2024. Only Youth B athletes who have made the development squad (in either discipline) are eligible to compete at this selection event.
The selection event for Youth B will be conducted across 2 climbs.
The climbs used for the selection event will be selected from the Open category climbs that have been set. The actual climbs used will be communicated on the day of the event, by the selectors giving at least one hours notice. Climbers will have access to fore-running videos and / or will be able to observe others climbing the routes. The two climbs will have places aggregated in the same way as a two climb qualifier to determine ranking. Time is not a factor except that a 6 minute limit is still applied.
The points awarded from the selection camp will be as set out in the CNZ Selection Policy.
Julian David and Sarah Tetzlaff have become the first New Zealand climbers to ever qualify for an
Olympic Games, following wins at the Oceania qualifier in Melbourne overnight.
Competing in the speed climbing discipline, Junior World Champion Julian David (18, Tauranga)
breezed through the opening rounds to make the men’s final.
Up against Australian Hayden Barton in the gold medal race David was clinical, finishing in 6.77s to
Barton’s 7.5s.
“I cannot believe it. I’ve dreamed of all sorts of outcomes. I’ve woken up at night thinking oh man
what if this happens’ and it has actually happened so it’s absolutely surreal,” said David.
“I have a bit of an off season now for a month and then I will hit 2024 in full training and see what I
can come out with at the end.”
Tetzlaff then won a close final against Australia’s Grace Crowley to claim her gold medal. The
Tauranga based climber scaling the wall in 8.54s to Crowley’s 8.88s.
“The final was incredibly close, and I didn’t think I had it to be honest,” said Tetzlaff.
“Anything can happen in Speed is the classic saying, that’s what my coach always says, so you just
have to treat every run as an individual run that you do in training. Forget about the last one, forget
about the next one and just go hard.”
Speed climbing is a form of sport climbing where athletes compete for the fastest time to the top of
the climbing wall. The competition takes place on a standardized 15m high climbing wall, and the
same holds and route are used each time for consistency across competition.
Climbing NZ High Performance Director Rob Moore says he’s absolutely thrilled his team claimed the
two Olympic qualification spots available at the competition.
“We’ve been training really hard and it’s just amazing that we’ve won both of these spots,” said
Moore.
“I’m incredibly proud of these athletes and our whole climbing team. Sarah and Julian performed
incredibly and have created history.
“It’s important to note there is still work ahead of us. These two athletes will need to meet the New
Zealand Olympic Committee’s top 16 selection policy before being selected for the Paris Olympics.
So, there is more work to do but we’re excited and looking forward to more competition.”
It has been an incredible ride over the last week with the IFSC Oceania Qualifier 2023 in Melbourne Australia.
We are extremely proud of the whole team who represented Climbing New Zealand and their sport with pride.
We are obviously especially proud of the results from the Speed Team with Sarah and Julian on their wins and being awarded places at the Paris Olympics.
We are also proud of the rest of the Speed team, with many personal best times and 3rd places for Abby and Flynn.
Congratulations to Jorja, Ned, Mischa, Meredith and Luke for all making finals.
Congratulations to Rebecca, Speedie and Oskar for making finals in the highly competitive Lead-Bouldering event.
Many thanks for Rob and Troy for supporting you all and to your supporters and Whanau for either being there or supporting from afar.
If you missed the Speed finals from Julian and Sarah, here is a better view that we got from the live feed care of Rob (only one camera involved, so much easier to follow) Very nervous times for all watching!
We will hear more from Sarah and Julian soon.
