Congratulations to all those that competed and thanks to all the parents and caregivers that enabled our young people to go over the ditch and experience this competition!
At the recent General Assembly, the IFSC made some changes to age categories and the minimum age to compete at World Cups. As you are aware, previously athletes had to be at least 16 (Youth A) to be able to compete. It has now been announced that athletes will have to be at least 17. That means our categories will likely change in the coming season to accommodate and feed into the next IFSC season in 2025.
Youth A is currently U18 will be U19
Youth B is currently U16 and will be U17
Youth C is currently U14 and will be U15
Youth D is currently U12 and will be U13
Juniors: It is currently our understanding that the Junior category will not exist anymore.
Therefore if your Child is in their first year of Youth A, they will likely have another 2 in Youth A. If your child is in their second year of Youth A, they are likely going to have another year in Youth A.
The committee is currently working through this and will confirm this over the next few month. As an organisation we support this change as it is in line with international research into sports. To read more about this, Sport NZ has some great resources with the ‘Balance is better‘ approach.

This information is for Youth Climbers: Youth B, Youth A and Juniors.
There is no additional selection event for Youth D, Youth C or Open athletes, other than their respective events for the season.
Selection into New Zealand Youth Teams for Lead will include an additional selection event that we run in tandem with the La Sportiva Open Lead Championships scheduled for the 23rd of March in Rotorua.
The event is an additional selection test for Youth B, Youth A and Juniors only.
Open athletes will be selected on their performance at the 2023/2024 La Sportiva Open Lead Championships only.
Youth C and Youth D will be selected on their performance at the La Sportiva Youth, Masters and Paraclimbing Championships only.
Youth B, Youth A and Junior athletes will be selected on their performances across the 2 events based on the points set out in the Selection Policy.
Details of the Selection Camp (Event) are as follows:
All Youth A and Junior athletes seeking NZ Youth Team selection are expected to compete at the Open Lead event in the Open category. This event will double as a selection event for Youth athletes seeking selection in NZ Teams in 2024
All Youth A and Junior athletes who compete will be ranked in their age group to earn selection points.
For Youth B athletes, this will also be a selection event for those seeking selection in NZ Teams in 2024. Only Youth B athletes who have made the development squad (in either discipline) are eligible to compete at this selection event.
The selection event for Youth B will be conducted across 2 climbs.
The climbs used for the selection event will be selected from the Open category climbs that have been set. The actual climbs used will be communicated on the day of the event, by the selectors giving at least one hours notice. Climbers will have access to fore-running videos and / or will be able to observe others climbing the routes. The two climbs will have places aggregated in the same way as a two climb qualifier to determine ranking. Time is not a factor except that a 6 minute limit is still applied.
The points awarded from the selection camp will be as set out in the CNZ Selection Policy.
